Crested Butte The NEW Umbrella Bar at Ten Peaks

The NEW Umbrella Bar at Ten Peaks

Picture this:  You’ve been out all morning skiing some incredible runs, when you hear the distant call of the alpenhorn calling all skiers to the now open Umbrella Bar.  And what do you know, it’s the perfect time for a ski break.

Many things have changed at the top of Painter Boy run, and you’ll notice as soon as your chair comes out of the aspens.  Where once stood a small cabin, now a beautiful Umbrella Bar and cook’s kitchen sits, like a vision flown in from Europe.

Depending on the day and what the weather is doing, the umbrella over the bar will either be down to...

Crested Butte Uley's Sleigh Ride Dinner

Uley's Sleigh Ride Dinner

The feeling in Tracker’s was giddy—the snow was falling an inch an hour outside, and most of us sipping our drinks at the bar were about to head out into the night on a sleigh pulled by a snowcat.  Giddy might be an understatement.

We were about to embark on a dining experience not many have had before—the Uley’s Sleigh Ride dinner at Crested Butte Mountain Resort is both a fine dining experience and a mountain adventure.  The beauty of this particular adventure, is it’s accessible to all ages, skiers or not.  It allows people that don’t ski or ride the opportunity to see the...

Crested Butte Grand Traverse Skimo Academy

Grand Traverse Skimo Academy

It’s no secret that tall mountains have inspired and lured people for hundreds of years; beckoning them to the peaks, no matter the difficulty or discomfort encountered along the way.  If not for the love of mountains and wild places of the world and of the mind, the sport of ski mountaineering would be a farfetched notion.  But it is because of the human need for something meaningful, beautiful and deeply challenging, that ski mountaineering is a sport that has caught on.  In its early days, it was simply a means to an end—a way to deliver mail to remote mining camps in California and...

Crested Butte Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 3

Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 3

As the morning light fills the base area of Mt. Crested Butte, I’m waiting for a snowmaker and a snowmobile to swing by so I can see what their crew of 27 does with their 12 hour shifts.  It’s frigid out—as in 6F, frigid.  While I sit in the cold, my breath frozen in place by the chill, I wonder what it must be like working all night in conditions like this.

Rhett pulls up, on hour 9 of his 12 hour shift that started at midnight.  For having been awake all night, working in the cold, he’s chipper and friendly—I can’t say I would be the same at that point in my shift.  But Mark...

Crested Butte Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 2

Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 2

Last week, you learned that snowmaking is not your average job.  There are long, odd hours and cold temps that roll into one very short seasonal job.  The science behind snowmaking takes what happens naturally during the winter, and adds all the right factors together to create snow when and where we want it.  The people behind snowmaking and the science of the job come together to create lap after lap on the ski hill, and thousands of happy faces that come through our lift lines.

Crested Butte Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 1

Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 1

When the first snowflakes fall from grayed skies, the collective feeling in Crested Butte is that of elation—winter might be an annoyance for some, but here in the mountains it’s a time for first tracks, early morning powder, chairlift chats and après ski cocktails with all your friends.  The warm regard we greet winter with is not unlike Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas morning:  it’s a feeling of camaraderie with dear friends and contended hearts for a day well spent.  The magic those first snowflakes lay over the town is nothing short of spectacular.  While Mother Nature provides truly...
